Paul,
Are you aware of the WiFi232?
I would never have described the WiFi232 anything like you're describing
your modem, especially the EBCDIC part. But I can see how someone
/might/ describe the WiFi232 like you are describing your ""modem.
Especially if they weren't aware of the WiFi232.
TL;DR: The WiFi232 is a serial device that pretends to be a modem and
interprets standard Hays commands to establish a connection to a remote
Internet connected system converting the connection to serial data.
Ostensibly the WiFi232 is meant to appear to be a modem for and to a
retro computer while actually being a contemporary 802.11 WiFi client to
establish Internet connections.
The WiFi232 also happens to be a little bit larger than a small match
box. It's definitely smaller than a large match box.
The WiFi232 is also a full (low power) computer and significantly
smarter and more capable than a lowly modem that it pretends to be.
