In another thread we wondered if there was a way to determine the
physical geometry of a hard drive. You might find the liked article
interesting in that the author has a go at doing just that.

A pretty long winded story ... but right and with fewer words:

time measure of consecutive numbered sector reads were also my preferred*
method to find geometry data.

* preferred because there is no other option available :)

So SMART is no longer in favour, then. ;-)

ways to deal with bad disk areas.

yeah, it just tells about the bad ones but nothing about real geometry.
